Remodeling a bathroom could be as simple as retiling the shower and painting the walls or as complex as replacing all the appliances along with tearing up the floor and walls as well. Some of the main things that are replaced during a bathroom remodeling are the cabinets, floors, walls, toilet, shower, bathtub, and various fixtures. Much of what will be replaced could depend on the budget that is being worked with as a complete remodel will be very expensive and is not an easy job. The price will increase further if a professional contract is hired to complete the job.

Factors of the Cost

Based on the work that is being done, a bathroom remodel can start as little as $2,000 but can go as high as almost $20,000. The brand and quality of the materials needed will play a large part in the pricing but the labor involved is also a large chunk if a contractor is hired. For a standard bathroom measuring 45 to 65 square foot, a minimal remodeling job can cost as low at $2,500 up to almost $4,000. The most dependent factor of the price is going to be what specific items are being replaced. Here are estimates of what it’s going to cost to replace the following bathroom fixtures:

  • Some of the cheaper items to replace running between $20 and $300 each include fans, hardware, insulation, lighting, mirrors, trim, and paint.
  • The more expensive items such as cabinets, drywall, and flooring will cost anywhere form $50 up to $500 depending on the amount needed and the materials you choose. Hardwood flooring averages $10 per square foot but ceramic flooring can be as cheap as $3 per square foot. Drywall can be charged per sheet, around $50 each, or by the hour for about $65 per hour depending on the contractor.
  • Full bathtub and shower replacements will vary depending on the model and materials you choose to work with.

Unexpected Costs

When a contractor completes the job, financing may be available to help pay for larger projects. To apply for the financing there may be a small initial application fee but if you’re approved, there will also be interest rates which will add a hefty fee to the cost of remodeling a bathroom.

Different companies treat the initial consultation differently and may or may not include that with the total cost. If you get multiple quotes, some companies may charge you if you do not end up using their services but others will waive the fee if you decide to use them for the job.

On top of the cost of the materials being used for the job, labor will cost just as much if not more. Depending on the company and number of professionals working on the job, the hourly rate could be as little as $15 or as high as $50.

Ways to Save

Instead of replacing an entire bath tub, shower, or toilet, consider refinishing them instead. They may look like the need to be replaced but it is much more cost effective to have them refinished instead and they will look just like new.
